Still Writing History

Black History Month isn’t just about what was written — it’s about what we’re writing now.

As a community, our present-day assignment calls for focus in a few key areas:

We must focus on stewardship of our stories.

Our lived experiences, wisdom, and testimonies matter. Documenting them — through writing, mentoring, teaching, and storytelling — ensures our truth isn’t lost or rewritten.

We must focus on legacy, not just survival.

Those before us fought to open doors. Our responsibility is to build something sturdy behind them — institutions, businesses, families, and values that last beyond us.

We must focus on collective progress, not individual applause.

Black history has always been written through community. Collaboration, partnership, and mutual support are still how we move forward.

We must focus on integrity in our influence.

Whether in leadership, creativity, faith, education, or advocacy — how we show up matters. We are examples, even when we don’t intend to be.

We must focus on hope in action.

Honoring the past means actively shaping a future where freedom, dignity, and opportunity are not just remembered — but practiced.

Black history is not finished.

It’s still being written — by how we live, lead, speak, and serve today.

February reflection:

What part of history are you helping write right now?
